The story of the novel and movie revolve around a genetic scientist whose research in mitochondria causes him to take extreme measures to revive his wife, and eventually leads to the creation of a new threat to all mankind.
The story of the game takes place after the events of the novel/move and revolves around a detective (Aya Brea), an opera singer (Melissa Pearce), and the alien parasite that dwells within the singer's body (Eve). Parasite Eve's tagline is "The worst foe lies within the self...". The game is loosely tied to the novel/movie, and one of the characters from the game is a person who personally witnessed the events of the novel. A sequel, Parasite Eve 2, also exists, and has also been adapted into games and film.
In 2000, Square released Parasite Eve II. Again featuring Ms. Brea as the lead character, this installment is set in Los Angeles, with Brea part of a team that neutralizes Neo-Mitochondrion Creatures (NMCs) in the various regions of L.A. Playing less like an RPG and more like Resident Evil (complete with RE style movement and shooting), the game featured a new cast of characters, a new battle system, and frightening monsters to conquer, the game wasn't as popular as its predecessor, but still managed to find a new audience. This lack of popularity is suprising, however, because the puzzles the players need to solve in this game were far more realistic than the "push statue into the snow so the key will fall out of the statues mouth" style puzzles seen in the Resident Evil Series.
