Papineau is the name of a federal electoral district in Quebec, Canada. Its population is 103,942. ( 2001)

1 Geography

The district includes the neighbourhoods of Villeray and Parc-Extention , and the western part of the neighbourhood of Saint-Michel in the City of Montreal.

2 History

The electoral district of Papineau was created in 1947 from Hochelaga, Mercier and Saint-Denis. In 1987 the district of Papineau—Saint-Michel was created from Papineau and Saint-Michel—Ahuntsic. In 1996 the district of Papineau—Saint-Denis was created from Papineau—Saint-Michel and Saint-Denis. In 2004, the name was changed to Papineau. The name comes from a street in Villeray named after Joseph Papineau .
