Home > Papillon (novel)

The Papillon is a novel written around 1970 by an ex-convict Henri Charrière of Devils Island, where this story is set. The book details his numerous escapes, attempted escapes, adventures and recaptures from his imprisonment in 1931 to his final escape to Venezuela, where he became a resident in 1945, married, and opened a restaurant in Caracas.

'Papillon' was Charrière's nickname, derived from a butterfly tattoo on his chest (papillon being the French for butterfly). The veracity of his account has been questioned but he always maintained that, excepting minor lapses in his memory, it was entirely true.
