Pall Mall is best known for being the home to various gentleman's clubs built in the 19th century. These include the United Services Club , Athenaeum , Traveller's Club , Reform Club and Royal Automobile Club. Pall Mall was also once the home of the War Office, with which it became synonymous, just like Whitehall refers to the administrative centre of the UK government.
The street name is derived from a game which used to be played there in the 17th Century. Pall mall is a mallet-and-ball game which is played in an alley.
