The abbreviation PXE refers in computing environments to the Preboot Execution Environment. PXE allows a computer to boot via a network resource without requiring an installed operating system.

As a protocol, PXE uses DHCP options to specify the location of bootstrap code on the network and to obtain an IP address. A machine with a PXE network card can to retrieve and execute bootstrap code to boot from the network.
