The Province of Oulu is a province of Finland. It borders the provinces of Lapland, Western Finland and Eastern Finland. It also borders the Gulf of Bothnia.

1 Historical Province

The province of Oulu was first introduced in 1775. After the Treaty of Fredrikshamn parts of Lapland were annexed to the province, and in 1922 Petsamo was annexed to the province. Finally, in 1936 Lapland was separated into its own province.

2 Administration

The State Provincial Office is a joint regional authority of seven different ministries. It promotes national and regional objectives of the State central administration.

3 Regions

The province of Oulu contains the Northern Ostrobothnia (Pohjois-Pohjanmaa/ Norra Österbotten) and the Kainuu (Kainuu/ Kajanaland).

The regions in Oulu Province are divided on 51 municipalitiesThe Municipalities Kunta in Finnish, Kommun in Swedish) represent the local level of self government in Finland and also act as the basic regional administrative units of the country. In 2003 there are 446 Municipalities in Finland. Of these 111 are towns, including the city of Oulu.
