It begins at the city of Dordrecht where the Beneden Merwede river forks into the Noord River and the Oude Maas.

The Dordtse Kil forks off soon after Dordrecht. After that the Oude Maas forms the northern boundary of the Hoekse Waard river island, flowing west until the Spui River forks off at the town of Oud-BeijerlandOud-Beijerland (population: 22,598) is a town in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. The Nieuwe Maas ("New Meuse") is a stretch of river in the Netherlands, taking water from the Rhine and the Meuse. It begins at the intersection of rivers Noord opposite the city of VlaardingenVlaardingen is a city in South Holland in the Netherlands. It is located on the north bank of the Nieuwe Maas/ Nieuwe Waterweg river where it connects with the Oude Maas. On the east the city is separated from Schiedam by a motorway.
