It burned in August 2000 with the loss of three lives and serious structural damage. It is scheduled to reopen in 2004 following massive reconstruction.
It is the tallest free-standing structure in the world and is a member of the World Federation of Great Towers. However, according to some information, in 2003 a new antenna was installed, making it at 577 meters once again the world's tallest free-standing structure, surpassing the CN Tower in Toronto.
