The Orkney Islands form one of 32 unitary council regions in Scotland, and are a Lieutenancy AreaThe Lieutenancy areas of Scotland are the areas used for ceremonial purposes such as Lord Lieutenancy. They are different from the traditional counties of Scotland and the Subdivisions of Scotland. The four cities of Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, and Glasg. Orkney consists of about 200 small islandAdriatic sea An island is any piece of land smaller than a continent and larger than a rock, that is completely surrounded by water. Very small islands are called islets . Although seldom adhered to, it is also proper to call an emergent land feature on as 16 kilometers north of CaithnessCaithness is a traditional county in northeast Scotland. Its county town is Wick, and the only other burgh in the county is Thurso. Other settlements include Reay, Mey, John O'Groats, Halkirk and Latheron. Its county council was abolished in 1975 when it in northern Scotland. The largest island in the group is known as "The Mainland"; about 20 are inhabited in total.

Orkney's administrative capital is Kirkwall on The Mainland. Home to the Saint Magnus Cathedral , it has about 7,000 inhabitants and a large port. The only other burgh is StromnessStromness is the second-largest town in the Orkney Islands and is located on the southwestern edge of the mainland of Orkney. A long-established seaport, it has a population of about two thousand. The town consists of a single main street flanked with hou at the western end of The Mainland, with a population of only about 2,000. The third largest settlement is St Margaret's Hope , on South Ronaldsay.

1 Islands

The largest island in Orkney is known as The Mainland. Other islands can be classified as north or south of The Mainland. The islands north of The Mainland are known collectively as The North Isles, those to the south as The South Isles.

1.1 The North Isles

The northern group of islands is the most extensive and consists of a large number of moderately sized islands, linked to the Mainland by ferries. Most of the islands described as " holm s" are very small.
