During World War Two, Operation Hambone was a small British-run deception operation run in early 1944 in support of the invasion of Normandy ( Operation Overlord).

A British actor, E. Clifton-James, depicted Field Marshall Montgomery on a well-publicized inspection tour through the Mediterranean. This was to mislead the Germans as to the true location of key Allied leaders.

This operation was the subject of the book and movie I Was Montie’s Double. Also called Operation Copperhead.
