Home > Definitions of Palestinian occupation

Definitions of Palestinian occupation have a bearing on the Arab-Israeli conflict, especially discussions about the ultimate disposition of the British Mandate of Palestine.

Probably the most widely used sense of the term Palestinian occupation or occupied Palestinian territories is:

Under this definition, Israel "occupies" the following parcels of land:

  1. the West Bank, formerly occupied by Jordan and currently a patchwork of areas under various degrees of PA and Israeli military or administrative control (see Oslo Accords).
  2. the Gaza Strip
  3. the Golan Heights, generally considered to "belong" to Syria.

In a related sense, the occupied Palestinian territories would be the same as above, but without the Golan Heights. They are considered "Palestinian" in the sense that they are sought by nationalists to form a new state to be called "Palestine" (see proposals for a Palestinian state and views of Palestinian nationalism ).
