NPLS Spectrum is a youth theatre company currently based in London, UK. It has achieved notable success in being among the youngest companies to perform at the Edinburgh Fringe. The company has been there five times in total. It has achieved some critical success. The Scotsman newspaper gave its first show three stars, even though it is now widely considered to be inferior to more recent Spectrum productions.NPLS Spectrum has produced five shows to date. All have been musicals. They are:
- Flood (1999), a reworking of the story of Noah and the Flood from the Bible, with modern ecological issues touched upon
- Wicked City (2000), a reworking of the Jonah story from the Bible
- The 8th Sin (2002), a completely new story in which two brothers were challenged by their scheming father to commit all seven deadly sins as quickly as possible. (The eponymous eighth sin was deceit)
- Tea! The Musical (2003), a light-hearted look at what would happen if tea was banned. Possible references to the continuing debate about whether or not to decriminalise or legalise cannabis were vehemently denied by the company
- Food 4 Thought (2004), a musical revue consisting of sketches all related to the subject of food and its place in society. It was the first Spectrum show to have a live band playing, instead of pre-recorded instrumental backing as with all the previous shows
The company's website can be reached here: [1]. Sources from inside the group suggest that their next show, Golem, will be a move away from the traditonal Spectrum show. The previous five Edinburgh shows have all been upbeat and humorous; Golem is said to be a hard-hitting drama set in 16th Century Prague.
