Borlaug was born in Cresco, Iowa, USA. He was awarded the 1970 Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in increasing crop yields, at a time when he was the director of the wheat program at the Mexico-based International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT).
