The French word née (feminine) or (masculine) (sometimes written as nee by English speakers) is commonly used when mentioning the former or maiden name of an individual, and is sometimes used to denote earlier names of companies and products. The word means born in the French language.

In common usage, it is often appears like this:

Jane Doe (née Dawson) was in a car accident today...

Indicating that Jane's last name had changed from Dawson to Doe. Sometimes, the person's entire original name is written, but that is usually only in special cases.
