Nanda Devi is the highest mountain which is completely within the territory of India. Its name means Goddess of Joy.

When the mountain was first climbed in 1936 by a British- American expedition, it became the highest peak climbed by man until the 1950 ascent of AnnapurnaMountains of Nepal Annapurna is a 55-km-long massif whose highest point, Annapurna I, stands at 8,091 m (26,538 ft), making it the 10th-highest summit in the world and one of the " eight-thousanders". Annapurna is a Sanskrit name which is translated as Go (8,091m).
