Detroit has had a thriving blues scene (see Detroit blues) for some time, including most famously John Lee Hooker.

2 Motown

Motown Records dominated soul music for many years. Musicians included Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, Martha & the VandellasMartha & the Vandellas were an American Motown group of the 1960s. Martha Reeves, Annette Beard Sterling Helton, Gloria Williamson and Rosalind Ashford founded a group called The Del-Phis in 1960, then recording an unsuccessful single as The Vels . Reeves, Smokey RobinsonSmokey Robinson (born February 19, 1940) is an American R&B and soul singer and songwriter. He was born William Robinson in Detroit, Michigan. In 1955, Robinson helped found the Miracles and became lead singer. The group issued a few somewhat successful s, Mary WellsMary Esther Wells was born May 13, 1943, and died July 26, 1992 of cancer of the larynx. She was a chart-topping singer of pop music. Auditioned for Tamla Records ( Berry Gordy). Signed to Gordy's Motown label in 1961. Remained with Motown until 1966. and The SupremesFlorence Ballard, Mary Wilson and Diana Ross The Supremes were a wildly successful Motown all girl singing group that was active from 1959 until 1977. Originally known as The Primettes from 1959 to 1961, and later, from 1967 to 1970, known as Diana Ross &. The Jackson 5 who also recorded on Motown were from Gary, IndianaGary is a city located in Lake County in northwest Indiana in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 102,746. It borders Lake Michigan and is known for its large steel mills, emissions from which are of, just a few miles from the Michigan border. Led by Berry GordyBerry Gordy, Jr. born Detroit, November 28, 1929) is an American record producer, founder of the Motown record label and director of its subsidiary Gordy Records. Gordy was the seventh of eight children born to the middle class family of Berry Gordy, Sr., Motown revolutionized soul and made Detroit one of the American centers of musical innovation.

3 Pop

Singer Madonna, born Madonna Ciccone in Bay City, Michigan, rose to be considered the "Queen of Pop" by many. Her long career began in the early 1980s and she continues to top charts today.

Joni Mitchell spent part of her career playing in small clubs around Detroit.

4 Rock

1970s Grand Funk Railroad, led by guitarist Mark Farner, began their career in Flint,_Michigan. The band, known for its hit single, "We're an American Band" took its name from the famous Canadian rail line Grand Trunk Railroad, which is also prominent in Michigan. Other major rock acts from Michigan include Bob Seger, Alice Cooper, and Ted Nugent. Grand Rapids band The Verve Pipe rose to brief stardom in the late 1990s with the hit "Freshmen".

Recent years have seen the Detroit area rock scene get attention again with the rise of The White Stripes.

5 Punk rock

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, punk rock pioneers like MC5 and The Stooges (including Iggy Pop) came from Detroit. These performers had incendiary lyrics and outrageous, highly physical live shows.

5.1 Hardcore

In the 70s, Detroit had a small New Wave scene that included The Romantics and Sonic Rendezvouz Band , who played at a converted bowling alley called Bookie's. The hardcore punk scene had arrived by 1981, and included Detroit bands L7 and Negative Approach , as well as Necros ( Maumee, Ohio), Violent Apathy ( Kalamazoo, Michigan) and Meatmen and Crucifucks ( Lansing, Michigan). Tesco Vee , of the Meatmen, launched the first Midwest hardcore record label, Touch & Go . Tesco also helped form an alliance between the Detroit scene and Minor Threat and other Washington DC bands (see Music of Washington DC).

The Detroit hardcore scene was known for violent, right-wing skinheads, led by The Allied and Negative Approach. Other bands that are notable from the area include the Fix from Detroit and the State from Ann Arbor.

6 Hip hop

Michigan's most famous hip hop star is undoubtedly Eminem. Other performers include Insane Clown Posse and Kid Rock. A form of Miami bass called ghettotech arose in Detroit in the 1990s, influenced by Detroit pioneers of electronic dance music such as Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson.
