Burundi is a Central African nation that is closely linked with Rwanda, geographically, historically and culturally. Internationally, the country has produced an exteremely notable music group in the Master Drummers of Burundi , the former royal percussionists. It was the Master Drummers that inspired Thomas Brooman to organize the first WOMAD festival in 1982, igniting the world music scene.
Burundian-Belgian musicians like Éric Baranyanka , Ciza Muhirwa and, especially, Khadja Nin , have more recently gained prominence.
