Mount Pinatubo is an active volcano located on the island of Luzon in the Philippines. It most recently erupted on June 15, 1991. Mount Pinatubo lies at the intersection of the borders of the provinces of Zambales, Bataan, and Pampanga. Before the 1991 eruption, Pinatubo lay dormant for more than 600 years.
The 1991 eruption resulted in many changes. Ashfall and lahar inundated the rice fields of Central LuzonCentral Luzon region contains the largest plain of the Philippines and produces most of the country's rice supply. Its provinces are: Aurora, Bataan, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Tarlac, and Zambales. There are twelve cities which include: Balanga from making vast areas of previously agricultural land unproductive. The yearly rainy season brought about rampaging lahars which would only abate after ten years. The average temperature in many parts of the world decreased .5 degrees in 1992 compared to the 30 year average as a result of the atmospheric aerosol that was still present two years after the eruption. The eruption was also one of the reasons why the U.S. military forces left their bases in the Philippines, after mounting a massive rescue effort to save civilians. Subic Bay Naval BaseSubic Bay is bay on the west coast of the island of Luzon in the Philippines, about 100km northwest of Manila Bay. It is a successful industrial and commercial area known as the Subic Bay Freeport Zone under the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority. Subic Bay was 75 km (50 mi.) to the southwest, while Clark Air BaseClark Air Base is a former U. Air Force base on Luzon Island in the Philippines. It is near the city of Angeles in the province of Pampanga and about 40 miles (60 km) northwest of Manila. Clark Air Base was arguably the most urbanized military facility in was a mere 40 km (25 mi.) to the east of the volcano's summit.
