Sauron had Minas Ithil under his control for a short time until he was defeated by the Last Alliance of Elves and Men. Afterwards Minas Ithil was restored as a watchtower.
In the Third Age, however, it was retaken by Sauron's minions, the Nazgûl, and renamed Minas Morgul ("Tower of Dark Sorcery").
Following the events of The Lord of the Rings, Minas Morgul was destroyed after the final defeat of Sauron.
