Mervyn's was founded in 1949 by Mervin G. Mossis and opened its first store in San Lorenzo, California. In 1979, Mervyn's was acquired by Dayton Hudson Corporation. During the mid 1990's Mervyn's tried a failed experiment to increase sales, by attempting to rename themselves "Mervyn's California".
Today Mervyn's is part of Target Corporation with sales of $4 billion and 264 stores in 14 states and 28,000 employees. In 2004, Target Corporation announced that its Mervyn's and Marshall Field divisions were for sale, in order for the corporation to focus on its flagship Target brand. In June 2004, Target Corp announced that it had sold its nine Minneapolis-St Paul area Mervyn's stores to May Department Stores who would close them.
