McMullen County is a county located in the U.S. State of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 851. Its county seat is Tilden 6. McMullen is named for John McMullen , founder of a colony in Texas.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,959 km˛ (1,143 mi˛). 2,883 km˛ (1,113 mi˛) of it is land and 77 km˛ (30 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 2.59% water.

As of the census 2 of 2000, there are 851 people, 355 households, and 238 families residing in the county. There are 355 households out of which 25.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.70% are married couples living together, 5.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.70% are non-families. 30.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.40 and the average family size is 3.01.

In the county, the population is spread out with 23.40% under the age of 18, 6.30% from 18 to 24, 23.70% from 25 to 44, 28.70% from 45 to 64, and 17.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 101.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 105.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $32,500, and the median income for a family is $35,417. Males have a median income of $26,953 versus $20,982 for females.
