May Department Stores was founded in 1877 by David May in Leadville, Colorado. Headquarters moved to St. Louis, Missouri in 1905, and the company went public in 1911. Mary Livingstone was working as a lingerie salesgirl here when she met her future husband Jack Benny. Later, the department store was used as a setting in his radio and television shows.
