Sir Matthew Busby (Orbiston, Glasgow May 26 1909 - January 20 1994) was a football player and manager, most noted for his spell managing Manchester United F.C. during the 1950s and 1960s

As a player, Busby enjoyed spells at Manchester City F.C and Liverpool F.C. and played at international level for Scotland once, before his career was cut short by the World War II.

Busby joined Manchester United as manager in 1945. His team were runners up in the league in 1947, 1948, 1949, and 1952 before winning the championship in 1952. During this time, the team picked up the affectionate nickname the Busby Babes, due to the youthfulness of some of his signings, and included players such as Bobby Charlton and Duncan EdwardsDuncan Edwards ( October 1, 1936 February 21, 1958) was an English footballer. Born in Dudley, England, Signed for United June 1952 (amateur), 1 October 1953 (professional). On the 4 April 1953, he became the youngest footballer to play in the First Divis. In 1958, tradgedy struck the Busby Babes as the Munich air disasterThe Munich air disaster happened on February 6, 1958, when British European Flight 609 a British European Airways "Elizabethan" class Airspeed Ambassador charter aircraft (G-ALZU 'Lord Burghley'), carrying players and backroom staff of Manchester United F took the lives of eight members of the team. Busby himself was severely injured and was twice given his last rites.

In the 1960s, Busby rebuilt the Manchester United team, with famous players including Denis LawDenis Law (born February 24 1940 in Aberdeen, Scotland, United Kingdom) is a Scottish football player, who enjoyed a long and successful career as a striker from the late 1950s to the early 1970s. Despite being Scottish, Law spent most of his career playi and George BestGeorge Best (born May 22, 1946) was a Northern Irish footballer, born in Belfast. He is best known for playing for Manchester United F. between 1963 and 1973, where he wore the famous number 7 shirt. He made 361 appearances for the club, and was a top goa.
