The Mathews Bridge in Jacksonville, Florida spans the St. Johns River, bringing traffic along Arlington Expressway between Arlington and Downtown.
The bridge has a notoriously problematic grating at the top, which is designed to lift up to allow tall ships to pass through. After the previous grating wore out, a new one was installed, causing drivers to complain that the replacement was slippery and hard to drive on. That grating was replaced with a new, "state of the art" grating, which has also proven quite deadly. Recently, Donna Campbell of Hilliard, Florida was killed when she lost control of her 1984 Jeep Wrangler on the grating, which was slippery from recent rain. This particular accident has been a major factor in citizens persuading the Jacksonville City Council to act concerning the grating.
