The highway starts from U.S. 1 at the intersection with North Street (near Government Center) as the East Boston Expressway (southbound) and William F. McClellan Highway (northbound) from Boston. It connects to Boston via the Sumner Tunnel (inbound/southbound, toll) and Callahan Tunnel (outbound/northbound, no toll).
The road continues as a divided freeway, serving as a major route to Logan Airport (at least before the Interstate 90 extension). While running through Revere, Massachusetts, it continues as a divided commercial highway (where it is known as Lee Burbank Highway), then as North Shore Road (which runs through the isolated Point of Pines neighborhood) until exiting Revere over the General Edwards Bridge. Most of the portion of the highway running through Lynn, Massachusetts is known as The Lynnway. After the Lynnway portion, the route follows undivided local streets for the rest of its length, ending in Newburyport.
