Marion County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of 2000, the population is 16,140. The county seat is Yellville.

Marion County was formed on 3 November 1835 and was named after General Francis Marion who fought in the American Revolution.

1 Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,658 km˛ (640 mi˛). 1,548 km˛ (598 mi˛) of it is land and 110 km˛ (43 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 6.66% water.

2 Demographics

As of the census 2 of 2000, there are 16,140 people, 6,776 households, and 4,871 families residing in the county. The racial makeup of the county is 97.52% White, 0.12% Black or African American, 0.76% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.13% from other races, and 1.22% from two or more races. 0.76% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,776 households out of which 26.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.30% are married couples living together, 7.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.10% are non-families. 24.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 2.79.

In the county the population is spread out with 22.10% under the age of 18, 6.00% from 18 to 24, 23.30% from 25 to 44, 28.50% from 45 to 64, and 20.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 97.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $26,737, and the median income for a family is $32,181. Males have a median income of $22,877 versus $17,729 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,588. 15.20% of the population and 11.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 23.50% of those under the age of 18 and 14.40% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
