Main-Tauber is a district (Kreis) in the north-east of Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Neighboring districts are (from north-west clockwise) Miltenberg, Main-Spessart, Würzburg, Neustadt (Aisch)-Bad Windsheim and Ansbach (all in Bavaria), and the districts Schwäbisch Hall, Hohenlohekreis and Neckar-Odenwald.

1 History

The district was created in 1973 by merging the districts Bad Mergentheim, Tauberbischofsheim and parts of the district Buchen. At first it was called Tauberkreis, in 1974 it was renamed to its current name Main-Tauber-Kreis.

2 Geography

The name of the district already names the two main rivers. The Main forms the northern boundary of the district, while its affluent Tauber flows through the district from southeast to north. The north of the district covers part of the SpessartThe Spessart is a hill chain in northwestern Bavaria and southern Hesse, Germany. On three sides it is bounded by the Main River, which describes a long curve. Two large cities are located at the foot of the Spessart: Aschaffenburg and Wurzburg. Although mountains, while the southern area is called Bauland.
