The province is located between several mountain ranges and thus enjoys a cooler climate then most of the other areas of Thailand. The Salween River forms part of the boundary with Myanmar.
The province was part of the Lannathai kingdom as well as of Burma. The strong influence of the Burmese can still be seen in the building style of the temples.
63% of the population in the province are members of the hill tribes, among them the Hmong, Yao, Lahu, Lisu, Akha and KarenThe Karen also known in Thailand as the Yang or Kariang are an ethnic group in Myanmar ( Burma) and Thailand. The Karen live mostly in the hilly eastern border region of Myanmar, primarily in Karen State, with some Karen in Kayah State and southern Shan S. Another big ethnic group are the ShanThe Shan are an ethnic group of Southeast Asia. The Shan live primarily in the Shan State of Myanmar, and in adjacent parts of China, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. The Shan number approximately 6 million, but a population census has not been taken. The province has the lowest population density of all the provinces of Thailand.
| The provincial seal show an elephant swimming in water. Elephant training for forest work was very popular in the province. Ban Mae Hong Son was one of two communities built around an elephant camp by Prince Kaew Muang Ma.
The provincial tree is Millettia brandisiana , and the provincial flower is the Mexican Sunflower ( Tithonia diversifolia ). |
The province is subdivided in 7 districts ( AmphoeA amphoe (sometimes also amphur Thai: ) is the second level administrative subdivision of Thailand. Usually translated as district amphoe make up the provinces. Amphoe are further subdivided into tambon. Altogether Thailand has 795 districts and 81 minor). These are further subdivided into 45 communes ( tambonTambon ( Thai: ) is a local government unit in Thailand. Below district (amphoe) and province (changwat) they form the third administrative subdivision. As of the 2000 census there are 7254 tambon, not including the 154 kwaeng of Bangkok, which are set at) and 402 villages (mubaan).
