The MOS Technology 6581/8580 SID (Sound Interface Device) was the built-in sound chip of Commodore's CBM-II, Commodore 64 and Commodore 128 home computers. It was one of the last sound chips to be made for any home computer prior to the digital sound revolution. The SID was created by engineer Robert Yannes , who later founded the Ensoniq digital synthesizer company. Together with the VIC-II chip, the SID was instrumental in making the C64 the best-selling computer in history, and is partly credited for initiating the demo scene.

- three separately programmable independent audio oscillators (8 octave range, approximately 16 - 4000 HzHz or hz may mean: Herero language ( ISO 639 alpha-2, hz Hertz, unit of frequency Lists of two-letter combinations.)
- four mixable waveformWaveform quite literally means the shape and form of a signal, such as a wave moving across the surface of water, or the vibration of a plucked string. In many cases the medium in which the wave is being propagated does not permit a direct visual image ofs per audio oscillator ( sawtoothThe sawtooth wave is a kind of basic waveform. It is named a sawtooth based on its resemblance to the teeth on the blade of a saw. A bandlimited sawtooth wave pictured in the time domain (top) and frequency domain (bottom). Ideally a square wave has instantaneous alternation between a maximum and a minimum (which can be zero or negative) amplitude level. - one multi mode filterAn electronic filter eliminates unwanted frequencies from an electronic signal. There are several kinds of electronic filters: A low-pass filter passes low frequencies. A high-pass filter passes high frequencies. A band-pass filter passes a limited range featuring ( low-passDigital signal processing A low-pass filter passes low frequencies fairly well, but attenuates 'high' frequencies. Therefore it is better called a high-cut filter or treble cut filter. Also the term hiss filter sometimes used. - three attack/decay/sustain/release (ADSR) volume controls, one for each audio oscillator.
- three ring modulators.
- oscillator sync for each audio oscillator.
- two 8-bit A/D converters (typically used for game control paddles)
- external input (for sound mixing with external signal sources)
- random number/modulation generator
