Lumberton Township is a township located in Burlington County, New Jersey. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 10,461.

1 Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 33.8 km² (13.0 mi²). 33.3 km² (12.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.30% water.

Lumberton Township borders Eastampton Township, Southampton Township, Medford Township, Mount Laurel Township, Hainesport Township, and Mount Holly Township.

2 Demographics

As of the census 2 of 2000, there are 10,461 people, 3,930 households, and 2,731 families residing in the township. The population density is 313.8/km² (813.0/mi²). There are 4,080 housing units at an average density of 122.4/km² (317.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 78.31% White, 13.75% African American, 0.23% Native American, 3.38% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.90% from other racesThe United States Census Bureau uses the federal government's definitions of race when performing a census. There are 3,930 households out of which 39.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.9% are married couplesMarriage is a relationship that plays a key role in the definition of many families. Precise definitions vary historically and between and within cultures, but it has been an important concept as a socially sanctioned bond between people who (usually) are living together, 10.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.5% are non-families. 25.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.17.

In the township the population is spread out with 28.1% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 35.6% from 25 to 44, 19.0% from 45 to 64, and 11.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.6 males.
