He started the 2003–04 season as a backup for Romain Larrieu . However Larrieu sustained an injury to his cruciate knee ligaments and McCormick soon established himself as being a competent replacement. A 2–0 victory over Stockport County on 24 January 2004 saw McCormick set a new club record of seven consecutive clean sheets (games without conceding a goal).
