Home > Los Altos Hills, California

Los Altos Hills is a town located in Santa Clara County, California. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 7,902.

The town's zoning regulations are among the strictest in California, requiring a minimum lot size of one acre, setbacks from the property boundary, and easements for public pathways. The town is set in rugged terrain which offers excellent views of the San Francisco Bay Area. Along with the additional factor of California's chronic housing shortage, the result is that homes in Los Altos Hills routinely sell for amounts in excess of $2 million.

In a comical attempt to comply with California's affordable housing laws, the town government occasionally encourages residents to let servants live in on-site cottages or guest rooms, so that those spaces can be counted as affordable housing units.

The town's most famous residents are the Packard family, as in the descendants of David Packard, co-founder of Hewlett-Packard. Barry Bonds also resided briefly in Los Altos Hills during 2001.

The town has no commercial or industrial zones and is dependent on the adjacent city of Los Altos and the county government for many services. The town's only large-scale commercial operation is the student store on the campus of Foothill College. Foothill is the primary community college for the northwest corner of Silicon Valley, and is somewhat well-known among architects for its unusual Japanese-inspired architecture.
