Spoiler warning: Plot or ending details follow.

It is set on a planet ruled by a group who have used advanced technology to set themselves up as gods, modelling themselves on Hindu deities and rewarding the faithful with reincarnation (provided using cloned bodies and mind transfer). The protagonist, Sam, is a renegade "god" who is trying to restore self-government to the people, using, among other techniques, Buddhism as a culture jamming tool.

Lord of Light is also the title of a song by Hawkwind, possibly named after the Zelazny novel, although there is no direct reference to it in the lyrics. Hawkwind also recorded songs based on Zelazny's Damnation Alley and Jack of ShadowsWritten by Roger Zelazny and published in 1971, Jack of Shadows is a work of science fiction. Story The novel is set in a world whose rotational period is equal to its revolutionary period. Thus one side of the planet is always in light, and the other in.
