The borough was formed in 1965 from areas of Middlesex (boroughs of Finchley and Hendon, and Friern Barnet urban district) and part of Hertfordshire ( East Barnet and Barnet urban districts).

According to the 2001 census the borough has a population of 314,564. The borough is 74% white, 9% indian and 4% black african. It has the largest Jewish population in the UK at 14.8%. 67% of householders are owner-occupiers.
