Located halfway between Princeton and Trenton, this village and township were founded as Maidenhead, perhaps because of its taverns and the activities therein. The town and township were renamed after the War of 1812 to honor naval hero James Lawrence (famous for saying "Don't give up the ship" during the Battle of Lake Erie).
Lawrenceville is home to The Lawrenceville School, a private boarding school founded in 1810. The township is also the home to Bristol-Myers Squibb's world headquarters, the Lenox corporation, Rider University, and Educational Testing Service's headquarters.
