Kyivs’ka oblast’ (Київська область in Ukrainian) is an oblast' ( province) in northern Ukraine. Its capital is Kyiv. Despite hosting governing bodies of the province, Kyiv itself is independent from surrounding oblast' (being a municipality). The Russian name of the region is Kievskaya oblast' (since the city is called Kiev in Russian), a variant which is more familiar to readers in the West.
Geographically, the province is divided into two almost equal parts by the Dnipro River flowing southwards.
The north-western end of the province is a part of a closed devastated zone around the former nuclearNuclear means "of or belonging to the nucleus (or center) of something", from Latin for kernel or nut. Which pronunciations of "nuclear" are commonly acceptable is a matter of some debate and amusement; see Nucular for an example. Where the subject is the plant of Chornobyl. The largest city within zone is Pryp'yatUkrainian Prypyat , Russian Pripyat , abandoned city located in the north of Ukraine, near the Belarus border. The area of the region is 28,100 km². Its population, excluding Kyiv itself, (as of 20042004 is a leap year starting on Thursday (the link is to a full 2004 calendar), and has also been designated the: International Year of Rice International Year to Commemorate the Struggle against Slavery and its Abolition Elections are to be held in 73 co- 05-01 ) is 1.8 million.
