Kuat Drive Yards is the largest military shipbuilding corporation in the Star Wars universe and owns several subsidiary corporations including Kuat Systems Engineering and Rothana Heavy Engineering (the latter of which provided armament and ships for Supreme Chancellor Palpatine's clone army during Clone Wars). KDY is one of the few major corporations which sided with the Galactic government during the Clone Wars, against the Confederacy of Independent Systems.
Sienar Fleet Systems is another contributor of military starships for the Empire.After the Galactic Civil War, New Republic took control of Kuat Drive Yards and company begin protuct the spaceships to Republic, but also some factories of Kuat Drive Yards continue building of the Star Destroyers and Walkers to the Imperial Remnant.
KDY's rough parallel in the real world is Northrop Grumman Newport News, which is the only shipbuilding company in the United States which has the expertise and dockyards necessary to build the U.S. Navy's mighty nuclear aircraft carriers. The main shipyards at the Kuat system actually ring the entirety of the system and in terms of sheer manufacturing ability it was first among equals.
