Kharkiv (Харківська область, Kharkivs’ka oblast’ in Ukrainian) is a region of eastern Ukraine, established on 27 February 1932. Its capital is Kharkiv. It has a population of 2,857,751 (as of 2004- 05-01 ), more than half (1.5 million) of whom live in the capital. The area of the region is 31,400 km².
