Astrakhan Khanate was a predominanty Turkic state which existed in 15th and 16th centuries in the area adjacent to the Volga mouth, where contemporary Astrakhan city is located. Volga was an important trade route. The control of Volga mouth allowed to control the trade. The area of lower Volga was populated by various tribes at least since 5th century AD. The Golden Horde controlled the area since 14th century. A semi-independent Khanate was established by Kasim Khan around 1466. Its location on the important trade route allowed it to accumulate significant wealth, but also attracted attention of the neighbouring states, and nomadic tribes. The Khanate was a subject of numerous invasions. Significant destruction was brought by Mengli Ghirai , who also destroyed the Golden Horde's capital Sarai Batu.In 1552 tsar Ivan IV of Russia (Ivan the Terrible) took Kazan. He also dispatched soldiers to Astrakhan. In 1554 he established Dervish Khan as a vassal ruler of Astrakhan Khanate. It is believed that Dervish Khan conspired with Crimean Khanate to drive Russians out of lower Volga. In 1557, Ivan IV sent an army again and annexed Astrakhan Khanate to Russia. Dervish Khan escaped to the castle of Azov.
