The trouble began when ethnic Hausa and Yoruba traders began fighting for control of a popular food market in the district of Ketu on the northern outskirts of the city on Thursday.
The Yoruba, who are the majority in the southwest, and the Hausa, in the north, are Nigeria's two largest ethnic groups, and clashes between them have led to renewed fears for the stability of Africa's most populous country.
