The city was founded on February 11, 1956. The current mayor is ASODA Yutaka who was elected to his third term of office in 2003.
In 694 A.D., the first capital city in Japanese history was founded at Fujiwara. Before that, the royal palace was itinerant from place to place. The capital Fujiwara-kyo, modelled after Chang'an in Tang China, existed here for sixteen years.
