Major Kamloops-area industries include primary resource processing (pulp mill, copper mine, ranching) as well as tertiary services (provincial lottery headquarters).
While situated in an arid, almost desert-like valley, Kamloops winters are generally mild with an occasional cold snap. Snow is common from December to March. On the other hand, summers in Kamloops can be quite hot. Temperatures of above 40'C have been recorded.

Kamloops is home to the University College of the Cariboo, an undergraduate degree-granting university college. In March 2004 the Premier of British Columbia, Gordon Campbell, announced that UCC would be granted full university status in April, 2005. The new University is named Thompson Rivers University.
