It is located in the province of Oulu and is part of the Kainuu region. It is located southeast of Oulujärvi , where discharge of the Oulujoki forms. The municipality has a population of 35,964 and covers an area of 1369.13 km² of which 212.04 km² is water. The population density is 31.0 inhabitants per km².
Kajaani is in the center of the landscape Kainuu and is in the border to Lapland (not however to the today's province Lapland). The physician and Volkskundler Elias Loennrot undertook his travels from here after Karelien. The city is 1,158.6 km² largely. The municipality is unilingually Finnish.
Kajaani was created 1651 like many other Finnish cities by the Swedish Generalgouverneuer by Brahe. Great importance attained at that time the trade with tar. This brought in tar barrels over the Oulujaervi and Oulujoki to the coast of the Bottni sea bosom with Oulu, where it was then shipped to completely Europe, in order it to sealing from ship joints to to use (kalfatern).
