Home > Kabyle

The Kabyle (Kabyle leqbayel) are a Berber people living in Kabylie, a mountainous region of northeastern Algeria, although their name, which originally just means "tribe" (from Arabic "qabīlah" قبيلة), is occasionally used to refer to other Berber groups. They speak the Kabyle variety of Berber. Since the Berber Spring in 1980, Kabyle have been at the forefront of agitation for the official recognition of the Berber language in Algeria (see Languages of Algeria.)
