Joy Lee Sadler was imprisoned from September 11, 2002 to January 10, 2003, by the Indonesian government. Sadler, a nurse, was imprisoned for visa violations as she had contacted guerillas in Aceh. Sadler, a native of Waterloo, Iowa, the United States, protested her detention by staging a 39-day hunger strike. Sadler states that she was arrested for providing medical aid to refugeeUnder international law, a refugee is a person who is outside his/her country of nationality or habitual residence; has a well-founded fear of persecution because of his/her race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group or politicals.
