Joseph Barbera was born in New York City. He started his career as an accountant for a law firm. During the Great Depression he tried unsuccessfully to become a magazine cartoonist. In 1932 he joined the Van Beuren Studio as an animator and scriptwriter, where he helped create Tom and Jerry as human characters.
He joined MGM in 1937 at their newly formed cartoon unit. The following year he teamed up with William Hanna to direct cartoons. Their first venture was Gallopin' Gals. In 1939 their Puss Gets the Boot (1940), the first Tom and Jerry film, won an Oscar nomination . Their collaboration at MGM lasted 20 years. During this period, their most famous cartoon characters were the cat and mouse duo Tom and Jerry, and in fact supplied all the screams and yelps of Tom, though this fact was never credited in the series. The animated shorts directed by them won 7 Oscars.
