Jefferies tubes, in the Star Trek fictional universe, are small tunnels or corridors that provide access to critical starship systems. They can be vertically or horizontally oriented, and sometimes form a network that allows travel throughout large volumes of a starship.

The term "Jefferies tube" was originally an inside joke among the original Star Trek production staff, a reference to Original Series art director Matt Jefferies, the man who designed the original starship EnterpriseThe United Star Ship Enterprise is a starship (a fictional type of spacecraft) in the fictional Star Trek universe, a science-fiction setting. Top Row (Left-To-Right): NCC-1701-C, NX-01, NCC-1701, NCC-1701-E Bottom Row (Left-To-Right): NCC-1701-D, NCC-170. The term quickly caught on among fans, becoming an official part of the show's lexiconA lexicon is a list of words together with additional word-specific information, i. a dictionary. In linguistics, a lexicon has a slightly more specialized definition, as it includes the lexemes used to actualize words. Lexemes are formed according to mor, and has begun being used informally in some real-world situations to refer to similar access passages. In the Next Generation series the Jefferies tube is mentioned in the episode "Quality of Life."
