He began drawing editorial cartoons in 1969, for The Richmond News Leader . He moved to the Chicago Tribune in 1980, where he continued to work until his death. His strips would also be syndicated in papers all over the United States.
MacNelly's cartoons were known for their distinctive and detailed style, as well as their biting satire. He was neither a strong liberal nor conservative, but instead mocked all politicians. His artistic conventions have since been widely emulated by many contemporary cartoonists.
He won the Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning three times, in 1972, 1978, and 1985- a rare achievement.
Starting in 1977 he began to also draw a comic strip called Shoe, about a community of humanized birds.
