Jean Vanier (born September 10, 1928) is the founder of L'Arche , an international ecumenical organisation that creates communities with people with learning disabilities.

Vanier was born in Geneva, Switzerland, the son of Georges Vanier (later Governor General of Canada) and his wife Pauline. Although Canadian, Vanier has lived much of his life in France, where L'Arche began. There are now over a hundred communities worldwide, in Canada, the USA, the UK, India, Japan and 25 other countries. Members of L'Arche try not so much to merely provide care as to share their lives with people. Vanier has written many books, notably Community and Growth, and his practical CatholicGeneral meaning Catholic means universal or whole''. With respect to the Christian Church, the early Christians used the term to refer to the whole undivided church. It is in that sense that all Christians today claim ownership of the term, including Prot spiritualitySpirituality may include belief in supernatural powers, as in religion, but the emphasis is on experience. What is referred to as "religion" and what is referred to as "spirituality" are often the same. In recent years, "spirituality" has often carried co which inspired L'Arche is shared by Henri NouwenHenri Jozef Machiel Nouwen ( January 24, 1932 September 21, 1996) was a Dutch Catholic priest and writer who wrote many devotional books, most famously perhaps The Wounded Healer''. His spirituality was influenced by many, notably by his friendship with J, who lived in and wrote about his time in a Canadian L'Arche community.
