Jean-Louis Schlesser is a competitor of offroad automotive racing events. He is known for his successful wins of many different competitions. Born in Nancy, France on September 12, 1948, he grew up in Morocco before returning to France to study and complete military service. He began racing in various paved-track events and shared the Formula 3 French national championship with Alain Prost. In 1981 he won the European Formula 3 Championship and also placed second in the Le Mans 24 Hours. He moved to Formula 2 in 1982 and dabbled in Formula 1 the following year, including the non-championship Race of Champions, but it didn't pan out for him. The mid- 1980s saw Schlesser perform in touring car and Grand Prix racing. He began to build his own dune buggies in the 1990's to compete in desert marathons and went on to capture the Paris Dakar Rally title in 1999.
